08/09/2018 — Jeremiah Chapters 7-9

Does Jeremiah 7:21-23 sound familiar?

Jeremiah 7:21-23   ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! 22 For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, 23 but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.

What about another example from Samuel?

1 Samuel 15:22  But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

And we will see this concept repeated multiple times in the Old and New testaments.  In fact one of Jesus’s main teaching to the “leaders” was that Obedience to the Will of God is far more important than just “going through the motions” of being religious.

Luke 11:42  “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

I enjoy listening to the scriptures read because it allows me to hear the emotion as God is speaking. I can feel his emotion. As much as he loves us and wants to bless us, by his very nature, he must punish our rebellion.

I just spent a few days with a little toddler who has yet to learn fully to obey. I feel like God sees us the same way at times. MY FAITH, MY WAY! Our stubborn, rebellious hearts lead us down the wrong path and trouble begins. Thankful for a Savior and His Spirit!
