John 17

In our reading we find Jesus praying to The Father before He faces the finial task of His mission. In this pray Jesus looks beyond the cross to the time when He again will be in the presence of The Father, then Jesus turns His focus to the disciples and to us. Jesus notes the strife and turmoil that will always exist between “the kingdom of darkness,” the world and “the kingdom of light.” Yet, the main focus of His pray is unity! Unity between He and The Father and all who are His disciples. Jesus declared that this unity would make a statement to the world that Jesus truly is The Son of God! The sad reality is, that division makes that opposite statement! “I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

What makes us different from the world? Holiness…, given from God but sought by us and requiring effort on our part. It unifies us with the Father and with each other, separating us from the world and the Evil One. Sadly, we have only to look at Sunday to know that the Evil One reigns in the world for a period of time.
