Revelations 3

Jesus in our reading told the church in Laodicea “you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Wow! Jesus told these Christians that to Him they were just like that foul tasting lukewarm water! He told them that He knew their deeds and they were neither hot nor cold “So I am about to spit you out” a better translation would be  – and “I am about to vomit.” I would not want to be a congregation or Christian whom our Lord says makes Him sick to his stomach! The best term to describe them is complacency! A Lukewarm spirit or a complacent spirit is about a spirit that is halfhearted about one’s Christian walk – they lack a passion, enthusiasm, and drive for Christ.
So their bible study is halfhearted!
Their prayer life is halfhearted!
Their attendance is halfhearted!
Their service is halfhearted!
* Please note being “lukewarm” is not about trying to live the Christian walk but failing! No! It’s about being complacent and because that spirit exists in our hearts we put little passion and drive in the process of pursuing righteousness!

And I think the first part of v. 17 is our challenge, as well “I am rich, I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.”

When all is going well and we are on “top of the world” I think we tend to become complacent & “lukewarm.” We trust in our own abilities & accomplishments. It is as if in our thoughts we use the words “I have …” instead of “By the grace of God I …”
