This reading presents two concepts to God’s people. The first is that God knows who belongs to Him! The image of the angel putting the seal on God’s people, the 144,000, comes right out of Ezekiel (Ezekiel 9:3-6) for the image then and in this chapter is about sealing God’s people before judgment comes. The 144,000 presents to us the image that all of God’s people both from physical Israel and spiritual Israel (the church) will be saved! The number 12 is ever associated with the people of God. The 12 patriarchs and the 12 apostles. The number 1,000 was often used to represent the concept of “all” or “everything.” So 12 x12 x 1,000 = 144,000 – all of God’s people! For the Jews numbers often were part of telling the story. The second concept that unfolds is the wonderful victory promised to God’s people who had withstood the tribulation. For the people to whom Revelation was written we’re going to face persecution for their faith. If they remained faithful – they would get to enjoy this amazing celebration in heaven, and so will we if we remain faithful!
